Wood And Leaves

It was a beautiful Saturday outside today. I spent my morning laying around the house and talking with Jo Anne and spending time with my sister and her kids. It took me awhile to get myself motivated to go outside and do some of the yard work that I need to get done. Once I did, I got the rest of the pile of wood picked up and stacked between the two trees by the back gate and got most of the leaves in the backyard raked into a pile. All I need to do now is find a old blanket to use to move the leaves to the compost pile.

The big pile of leaves.

The wood pile sorted out by size.

I still have a lot of work to do around the yard and house. I have a good start to getting to yard ready for some fun in the spring. The backyard is looking good now. I guess tomorrow, I will work on getting the house decorated for Christmas. I need to get the Christmas tree out of the garage and setup in the living room. I want to do a little more decorating out in the front yard then the lights I did last year. I hope to get a little extra money to get on Christmas stuff from the stores.

Cooking And Projects

I so far have been making the most of my time off from work for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day, I cooked all day for my family and today, I worked on a few projects around the house. I feel good about both days.

Mom and I got up early Thursday morning to start prepare for the Thanksgivings Day Feast. Mary, my oldest sister helped me get the second dining room table out of the garage and set it up in the living room. After, we got the table setup, Mary, headed to a friends house to help with their dinner. My nephew, Victor, stayed with us to help us cook the dinner. Victor enjoys cook and helping around the house. He was a lot of help with getting the turkey and the sides ready.

The turkey, yams, creamed onions, and gravy.

Macaroni and Cheese, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and Broccoli Salad

Everyone's favorite side I make, Green Bean Casserole.

After eating and everyone left, I helped mom clean and then crashed. I am glad I slept good last night so I could get working on some projects I need to get done around the house. Well I have the table out of the garage, I decided to to try to work on organizing the garage a little better. Things pretty much got thrown into the garage when I moved in. Having Mary help me get the table out made it easier to get to some boxes and other things I needed to move in order to move another table and a set of shelves in a better place. I even have a desk that I managed to move today that I am using as a place to sort though the boxes. I need to sort the things I want to keep and the things to get rid of.

I raked the leaves up in the backyard a little before my mom called to join her for lunch. I got a big pile of leaves in the middle of my yard now. As I was raking the leaves in the corner where the back gate is, I stared to pick up the wood I got from my neighbor's yard a few weeks back. I decided to stack the wood up between two tree by the back gate. I figure it would be safer to have the wood there then right next to the house where I have been stacking the wood. Besides, the two trees will provide something to hold the wood up. I am sorting the wood out by sizes and clearing the leaves as I stack more of the wood. Saturday, I hope to get most of the wood and leaves taking care of and make the house a little safer with the risk of fires in the area.

So far, I am making the most of my days off from work for the holidays. I hope, I keep myself going on working on the projects around the house. The work around the house remembers me that I am thankful that I have a house to take care of.

A Mountain Ride and Thanksgivings Shopping

Monday was the last full day of my vacation. Mom and I, took Rayna with us, and took a ride through the mountains of Western North Carolina. After dropping the books I sold over the weekend off at the post office and getting something to eat for breakfast we head off on our ride.

We got onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and drove up Craggy Gardens where the next section is close. We turned around and headed back towards Asheville. We got off at the exit for Weaverville and Vance's Birthplace. It turned out to be a whiny mountain road down to the main highway where you turn to go to Vance's Birthplace. Unfortunately, it is closed on Mondays. I would have stopped if it was open since Vance was the governor of North Carolina during the Civil War. We drove on up that road as it whined and turned over the mountain to Barnardsville, North Carolina. From Barnardsville, we drove out to Highway 19/23. We then followed Highway 19E though Burnsville and Spruce Pine. I have not been on Highway 19E in over ten years and a lot has changed and til changing with the widening on the road. I like driving though the little community north of Spruce Pine. I wanted to stop and take a couple pictures but by that time I needed to go the bathroom and there was no place to pull off the road and go. I may head back up in the spring to look around better. We drove onto Newland, North Carolina were I was planning to eat and use the bathroom. The McDonald's was be remodel and I did not see the Hardees until I was already past it due to the traffic. I ended up driving all the way down to Marion, North Carolina before getting to use the restroom and get something to eat.

We stopped at a Wendy's in Marion. The smoke from want I believe is the Clear Creek Fire, which is one of like 14 fires in Western Carolina, could be seen from all around Marion. The smoke from the fire was very heavy along Highway 70, west of Marion. It is sad to see the forest burning. The good news is so far no one has lost their homes or lives yet. I was going to post about my trip last night but I ended up falling asleep from being so tired.

Today, mom and I went shopping for the last of the stuff we needed for the Thanksgivings Dinner. I was glad it did not cost as much as I was thinking it was going too. We even got a few extra things not on our list. Including my mom and me, there will be at least 14 people eating at my house.

Surprisingly Good Steak Dinner At A Grocery Store

Mom has been bugging me for a couple weeks about a steak dinner that the Ingles Market in Mills River, North Carolina. One of her coworkers told her about it. I promised I would take her out there tonight even through I did not really have the money to do it. I am glad we did. It was enjoyable experience the employees for the Asian and Sub shop in the cafe area did an awesome job with the dinner and service. They kept the tables clean, drinks full, and got our order to us quickly. They served Prime Rib tonight. It was not the best I ever have but it did taste really good and was tender. It was a surprisingly good steak dinner at a grocery store.

After we eat we did a little shopping. I brought a turkey for 57 cents per pound. I guess I could find cheaper some where else if I checked but I do not have the time. The cheapest price I have seen so far was 99 cents per pound. I am glad, I have the main part of the Thanksgiving Dinner already. I will finished our Thanksgivings Dinner before I head back to work Tuesday night. Mom and I will have at least 12 guest for dinner if all show up. I am sure all of us will a good time and remember the things we are thankful for especially our family and friends.

Change Of Plans To Take Care Of Things For Mom

I was planning to go out with my friend Seth toady to take pictures for his photo contest next year. That changed last night when we were getting ready to head out to eat and I discovered the front tire was flat on mom's van. I had to take my mom to work this morning and then take care of her van.

After I dropped the van off to the garage and they check to see if they could fix the tires. I looked around the hardware stores and brought a bucket and some play sand. I put the bucket with the play sand inside it on the front pouch for mom to have a better place to put her cigarette butts. The bucket looks a lot better then the old cigarette can she was using. I moved it to the back pouch for now. Mom is not going to stop smoking as much I would like her too.

Now mom has two new tires on the van. I will have to reschedule doing my outing with Seth.

A Day Walking And Shopping In Greenville, SC

Monday, mom and I went down to Greenville, South Carolina. Mom and I walked Main Street and around Falls Park a little. There is a lot of construction going on in the downtown area so we did not get to explore as much as I would have liked. I am sure the construction will make a trip down to Greenville in the spring more interesting. I did manage to scout out some locations for adventures in the spring.

We spent a couple hours in downtown which is more then we should have with all the smoke from the wildfires. We enjoyed our time anyway.

The Reedy River coming through downtown Greenville.

People enjoying the falls in Falls Park.

Ducks enjoying a river below the falls.

A creek off to the side below the falls.

Mom and I enjoyed looking around the park and on Main Street. After eating lunch and looking around Mast General Store, we went to Haywood Mall and the stores on Woodruff Road. Everything I was looking for I could not find in the size or color, I wanted if I even found a price I wanted to pay. We both enjoyed are day and headed back home after eating dinner at a Mexican restaurant.

I am planning to go out for a hiking with my friend Seth on Thursday. I am looking forward to that outing.

Smoke From Wildfires

Today, was the first day of my vacation. I have the whole week off from work. I stayed inside today due to the smoke from several wildfires in the area. It was good to stay inside because it gave me time to focus on working on my books for my online store. I plan to work on my books a lot but it is not the only thing I plan to do this week. Monday, mom and I plan to go down to Greenville, South Carolina to do some shopping and sightseeing. I am also planning to go on a day hike or two with my friends, Joey and Seth.

Here is Western North Carolina we have not seen rain in rain. It is really dry outside. There is several wildfires in the area. Today, the smoke from the fires were really heavy today. The closes fire is around 15 miles (24 km) away from my house. It is called the Party Rock fire it is 2883 acres in size and only 15 percent contained. There has been mandatory evacuation issue for the area around the fire. Good news is no homes have been destroyed at this time. I hope it stays that way.

Smoke from my house. The camera did not pickup the smoke too good.

Mom and I went to the store across town to get a few things. The store is closer to the fire and the camera picked up the smoke better but the smoke was heavier than these pictures show.

While waiting on one of mom's medicines we looked around the store at the holiday stuff. I think my niece would love this display in the Christmas section of the store.

Work Shoe Shopping And Evening Out

Both, my mom and I, needed to get some new shoe for work. I wanted to go see a movie that is out in the theaters now. Mom and I decided to make a fun evening out.

I was glad I had another Saturday off from work. I am enjoying the time off but I miss the paychecks. I spent my day will mom was at work, doing some yard work and working a little on my online store. These are two things, I had not been able to do as much as I would have liked to do this year since I have been working a lot of overtime at work. I talked with my friend, Seth, and we planned to spend a day out taking pictures one day on my vacation that starts next weekend. Seth entered a photography contest at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair placed Best In Show in his division.

We mom got home from work she changed her clothes and we heading out. We stopped at the Discount Shoe Store. I got some steel toed shoes for work. I got same slip on shoes by Worx by Red Wings Shoes that I got last year. They are will made shoes. I have worn my work shoe for almost a year and a half 5 or 6 days a week and they still look like they have a while more to go. The best part is I will get $50 back from shoe for the shoes. Mom got some nice slip resistant shoes for her work at the restaurant. I hope they hold up as well as her last pair.

After buying the shoes, we headed over to Biltmore Park Town Square for an enjoyable evening. We started out in Barnes and Noble were I brought, The Complete Cook's Country TV Show Cookbook for mom and me. Since things are slowing up a little at work, I hope to be able to do a little more cooking. We eat dinner at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza. Mom had the Spicy Shrimp Pizza that she had been wanting for the past couple weeks. I had the Rosemary Chicken and Mushroom Pizza. Both pizzas tasted excellent. Brixx has a great beer offerings. I was tempted to get the sampler so I could try a couple different craft beers that they have. I did not have the extra money to get it. We went to the the Regal Theater and watch Boo! A Madea Halloween. I love watching Tyler Perry movies. This was the first I watched in a theater. I laughed a lot during the movie. The best thing about Tyler Perry movies is he makes good points about life in a entertaining way.
