Had A Merry Christmas

I know I have not been posting as much as I would like to have been posting lately. I have been sleeping most of the time that I have been off from work.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. My mom and I got gifts for all the kids this year. Mom got to see all her children on Christmas Day. My brother, James, met us at church on Christmas Eve and then stopped by the house Christmas Day. Seeing my brother, James, made mom really happy since we have not seen him in a long time.

It was a nice Christmas spending time with family and having good food to eat. Now it is time to start putting up the decoration until next year. I will spend this week, when I am not working, deciding on my goals for 2017. for I have a couple ideas for the Blog, I want to try out next year. One idea, is for a whole new Blog but I will need to see if I will have the money to do it. I am hoping things at work will not be as crazy since most of the bugs have been worked out of the computer program and I hoppe I will have more time to focus on the Blog and my online store.

Wood And Leaves

It was a beautiful Saturday outside today. I spent my morning laying around the house and talking with Jo Anne and spending time with my sister and her kids. It took me awhile to get myself motivated to go outside and do some of the yard work that I need to get done. Once I did, I got the rest of the pile of wood picked up and stacked between the two trees by the back gate and got most of the leaves in the backyard raked into a pile. All I need to do now is find a old blanket to use to move the leaves to the compost pile.

The big pile of leaves.

The wood pile sorted out by size.

I still have a lot of work to do around the yard and house. I have a good start to getting to yard ready for some fun in the spring. The backyard is looking good now. I guess tomorrow, I will work on getting the house decorated for Christmas. I need to get the Christmas tree out of the garage and setup in the living room. I want to do a little more decorating out in the front yard then the lights I did last year. I hope to get a little extra money to get on Christmas stuff from the stores.

Cooking And Projects

I so far have been making the most of my time off from work for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Day, I cooked all day for my family and today, I worked on a few projects around the house. I feel good about both days.

Mom and I got up early Thursday morning to start prepare for the Thanksgivings Day Feast. Mary, my oldest sister helped me get the second dining room table out of the garage and set it up in the living room. After, we got the table setup, Mary, headed to a friends house to help with their dinner. My nephew, Victor, stayed with us to help us cook the dinner. Victor enjoys cook and helping around the house. He was a lot of help with getting the turkey and the sides ready.

The turkey, yams, creamed onions, and gravy.

Macaroni and Cheese, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and Broccoli Salad

Everyone's favorite side I make, Green Bean Casserole.

After eating and everyone left, I helped mom clean and then crashed. I am glad I slept good last night so I could get working on some projects I need to get done around the house. Well I have the table out of the garage, I decided to to try to work on organizing the garage a little better. Things pretty much got thrown into the garage when I moved in. Having Mary help me get the table out made it easier to get to some boxes and other things I needed to move in order to move another table and a set of shelves in a better place. I even have a desk that I managed to move today that I am using as a place to sort though the boxes. I need to sort the things I want to keep and the things to get rid of.

I raked the leaves up in the backyard a little before my mom called to join her for lunch. I got a big pile of leaves in the middle of my yard now. As I was raking the leaves in the corner where the back gate is, I stared to pick up the wood I got from my neighbor's yard a few weeks back. I decided to stack the wood up between two tree by the back gate. I figure it would be safer to have the wood there then right next to the house where I have been stacking the wood. Besides, the two trees will provide something to hold the wood up. I am sorting the wood out by sizes and clearing the leaves as I stack more of the wood. Saturday, I hope to get most of the wood and leaves taking care of and make the house a little safer with the risk of fires in the area.

So far, I am making the most of my days off from work for the holidays. I hope, I keep myself going on working on the projects around the house. The work around the house remembers me that I am thankful that I have a house to take care of.

A Mountain Ride and Thanksgivings Shopping

Monday was the last full day of my vacation. Mom and I, took Rayna with us, and took a ride through the mountains of Western North Carolina. After dropping the books I sold over the weekend off at the post office and getting something to eat for breakfast we head off on our ride.

We got onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and drove up Craggy Gardens where the next section is close. We turned around and headed back towards Asheville. We got off at the exit for Weaverville and Vance's Birthplace. It turned out to be a whiny mountain road down to the main highway where you turn to go to Vance's Birthplace. Unfortunately, it is closed on Mondays. I would have stopped if it was open since Vance was the governor of North Carolina during the Civil War. We drove on up that road as it whined and turned over the mountain to Barnardsville, North Carolina. From Barnardsville, we drove out to Highway 19/23. We then followed Highway 19E though Burnsville and Spruce Pine. I have not been on Highway 19E in over ten years and a lot has changed and til changing with the widening on the road. I like driving though the little community north of Spruce Pine. I wanted to stop and take a couple pictures but by that time I needed to go the bathroom and there was no place to pull off the road and go. I may head back up in the spring to look around better. We drove onto Newland, North Carolina were I was planning to eat and use the bathroom. The McDonald's was be remodel and I did not see the Hardees until I was already past it due to the traffic. I ended up driving all the way down to Marion, North Carolina before getting to use the restroom and get something to eat.

We stopped at a Wendy's in Marion. The smoke from want I believe is the Clear Creek Fire, which is one of like 14 fires in Western Carolina, could be seen from all around Marion. The smoke from the fire was very heavy along Highway 70, west of Marion. It is sad to see the forest burning. The good news is so far no one has lost their homes or lives yet. I was going to post about my trip last night but I ended up falling asleep from being so tired.

Today, mom and I went shopping for the last of the stuff we needed for the Thanksgivings Dinner. I was glad it did not cost as much as I was thinking it was going too. We even got a few extra things not on our list. Including my mom and me, there will be at least 14 people eating at my house.

Surprisingly Good Steak Dinner At A Grocery Store

Mom has been bugging me for a couple weeks about a steak dinner that the Ingles Market in Mills River, North Carolina. One of her coworkers told her about it. I promised I would take her out there tonight even through I did not really have the money to do it. I am glad we did. It was enjoyable experience the employees for the Asian and Sub shop in the cafe area did an awesome job with the dinner and service. They kept the tables clean, drinks full, and got our order to us quickly. They served Prime Rib tonight. It was not the best I ever have but it did taste really good and was tender. It was a surprisingly good steak dinner at a grocery store.

After we eat we did a little shopping. I brought a turkey for 57 cents per pound. I guess I could find cheaper some where else if I checked but I do not have the time. The cheapest price I have seen so far was 99 cents per pound. I am glad, I have the main part of the Thanksgiving Dinner already. I will finished our Thanksgivings Dinner before I head back to work Tuesday night. Mom and I will have at least 12 guest for dinner if all show up. I am sure all of us will a good time and remember the things we are thankful for especially our family and friends.

Change Of Plans To Take Care Of Things For Mom

I was planning to go out with my friend Seth toady to take pictures for his photo contest next year. That changed last night when we were getting ready to head out to eat and I discovered the front tire was flat on mom's van. I had to take my mom to work this morning and then take care of her van.

After I dropped the van off to the garage and they check to see if they could fix the tires. I looked around the hardware stores and brought a bucket and some play sand. I put the bucket with the play sand inside it on the front pouch for mom to have a better place to put her cigarette butts. The bucket looks a lot better then the old cigarette can she was using. I moved it to the back pouch for now. Mom is not going to stop smoking as much I would like her too.

Now mom has two new tires on the van. I will have to reschedule doing my outing with Seth.

A Day Walking And Shopping In Greenville, SC

Monday, mom and I went down to Greenville, South Carolina. Mom and I walked Main Street and around Falls Park a little. There is a lot of construction going on in the downtown area so we did not get to explore as much as I would have liked. I am sure the construction will make a trip down to Greenville in the spring more interesting. I did manage to scout out some locations for adventures in the spring.

We spent a couple hours in downtown which is more then we should have with all the smoke from the wildfires. We enjoyed our time anyway.

The Reedy River coming through downtown Greenville.

People enjoying the falls in Falls Park.

Ducks enjoying a river below the falls.

A creek off to the side below the falls.

Mom and I enjoyed looking around the park and on Main Street. After eating lunch and looking around Mast General Store, we went to Haywood Mall and the stores on Woodruff Road. Everything I was looking for I could not find in the size or color, I wanted if I even found a price I wanted to pay. We both enjoyed are day and headed back home after eating dinner at a Mexican restaurant.

I am planning to go out for a hiking with my friend Seth on Thursday. I am looking forward to that outing.

Smoke From Wildfires

Today, was the first day of my vacation. I have the whole week off from work. I stayed inside today due to the smoke from several wildfires in the area. It was good to stay inside because it gave me time to focus on working on my books for my online store. I plan to work on my books a lot but it is not the only thing I plan to do this week. Monday, mom and I plan to go down to Greenville, South Carolina to do some shopping and sightseeing. I am also planning to go on a day hike or two with my friends, Joey and Seth.

Here is Western North Carolina we have not seen rain in rain. It is really dry outside. There is several wildfires in the area. Today, the smoke from the fires were really heavy today. The closes fire is around 15 miles (24 km) away from my house. It is called the Party Rock fire it is 2883 acres in size and only 15 percent contained. There has been mandatory evacuation issue for the area around the fire. Good news is no homes have been destroyed at this time. I hope it stays that way.

Smoke from my house. The camera did not pickup the smoke too good.

Mom and I went to the store across town to get a few things. The store is closer to the fire and the camera picked up the smoke better but the smoke was heavier than these pictures show.

While waiting on one of mom's medicines we looked around the store at the holiday stuff. I think my niece would love this display in the Christmas section of the store.

Work Shoe Shopping And Evening Out

Both, my mom and I, needed to get some new shoe for work. I wanted to go see a movie that is out in the theaters now. Mom and I decided to make a fun evening out.

I was glad I had another Saturday off from work. I am enjoying the time off but I miss the paychecks. I spent my day will mom was at work, doing some yard work and working a little on my online store. These are two things, I had not been able to do as much as I would have liked to do this year since I have been working a lot of overtime at work. I talked with my friend, Seth, and we planned to spend a day out taking pictures one day on my vacation that starts next weekend. Seth entered a photography contest at the North Carolina Mountain State Fair placed Best In Show in his division.

We mom got home from work she changed her clothes and we heading out. We stopped at the Discount Shoe Store. I got some steel toed shoes for work. I got same slip on shoes by Worx by Red Wings Shoes that I got last year. They are will made shoes. I have worn my work shoe for almost a year and a half 5 or 6 days a week and they still look like they have a while more to go. The best part is I will get $50 back from shoe for the shoes. Mom got some nice slip resistant shoes for her work at the restaurant. I hope they hold up as well as her last pair.

After buying the shoes, we headed over to Biltmore Park Town Square for an enjoyable evening. We started out in Barnes and Noble were I brought, The Complete Cook's Country TV Show Cookbook for mom and me. Since things are slowing up a little at work, I hope to be able to do a little more cooking. We eat dinner at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza. Mom had the Spicy Shrimp Pizza that she had been wanting for the past couple weeks. I had the Rosemary Chicken and Mushroom Pizza. Both pizzas tasted excellent. Brixx has a great beer offerings. I was tempted to get the sampler so I could try a couple different craft beers that they have. I did not have the extra money to get it. We went to the the Regal Theater and watch Boo! A Madea Halloween. I love watching Tyler Perry movies. This was the first I watched in a theater. I laughed a lot during the movie. The best thing about Tyler Perry movies is he makes good points about life in a entertaining way.

Victor And Julie Playing In The Leaves

My sister with her kids, can over today to spend time with mom and me. Victor asked if he could rake the leaves so he could play in them. He and Julie played in the leaves the other day but the wind already blown the leaves away. Victor raked up the leaves in the back yard tonight.

Mom Visiting Her Sister

Saturday evening, I took my mom down to visit our sister in Lenoir, North Carolina. It was my aunt's birthday Friday. We promise my aunt we would come visit her for her birthday, if I had off from work. I am glad to say I had tonight off.

We started down at 5 this evening since mom got off from her work late since they were busy at the restaurant where she works was busy today. We had a good hour and forty minute drive down with a little traffic. I was thankful for Google Maps because I would have gotten lost going to my aunt's house because, I had to make several left and right turns. We arrived at my aunt's house at a quarter before 7 as it was just getting dark.

Mom baked lasagna Friday night. We took a pan of it down with us for dinner for my aunt, my cousin and his wife and kids. Everyone enjoyed the lasagna. Mom made the lasagna with a mix of ricotta and cottage cheese without the egg as we normally do. The cheese layers were much creamer then with the egg. We all enjoyed dinner and talking. It was good to visit with my aunt and cousin since we do not get to see them. We sent our time talking and eating with a little goofing off. My aunt has been dealing with some health problems. My cousin had a flat tire this week and of course the spare tire was flat too. Fortunately, he had some people to stop and help him. Them are looking forward to joining us for Thanksgiving.

We left to head back home at 9. I do not like driving up the mountain at night because of the trucks. There was not many trucks on the interstate both down and back up. The traffic was lighter on the way back home.

Sifting The Old Compost Pile

This afternoon, I started working on sifting through my old compost pile. I will work a little bit at a time until it is done.

In the front is my old compost pile with the nice rich soil in the back in my new compost pile that I started a couple weeks ago. I got my soil sifter and wheelbarrow.

I put one shovel load in the soil sifter.

Shake the soil sifter picking out big clumps, rocks, and trash out as I shake.

The soil falls though the sifter into the wheelbarrow leaving the bigger piece in the sifter, which I put on the new compost pile. This is so it will continue breakdown and puts the microbes in the new compost pile to help with the breakdown process.

After about 45 minutes, I ended up with a wheelbarrow full of soil for my flower beds.

I picked out some trash most of switch comes from the trash that was in the spot before I moved into the house. The rest is the plastic left from the tape on the cardboard I shred and put on the compost pile.

In the end, I am left with nice rich soil to add to the flower beds around the yard. I was while worth the work.

Much Needed Yard Work

I was lucky enough to have another Saturday off from work. Today, I did some yard work which I have to say was much needed. It has been three weeks since I mowed the grass and the leaves are starting to fall off the trees. I am starting a new compost pile. I need to sift the old compost pile and put the soil from it in the flower beds and the stuff that need to compost some more on the new compost pile.

My neighbors in behind me had a tree come down in there yard a couple weeks ago. The guy their landlord sent to take care of the tree asked me if I wanted some of the wood. He left the wood in the ditch. This past week, I sent a couple days when I did not something else to do throwing the wood over the fence. At some point, I need to get it stacked up by the house to use in the fire pit.

Here is the backyard after I mowed the grass and got the leaves up. The lawnmower is a great way to take care of the leaves and put they on the compost pile.

Here is the front yard before I started my work.

It looks a lot better now I got the grass and leaves done.

The patio was a mess. There was a lot of leaves and acorns on the patio.

I picked up a two buckets of acorns before I started raking the leaves. I only got the one section done today. I hope to get the rest done tomorrow.

The walkway between the house and the garage gets full of leaves quickly. As you can see, Rayna was having fun running around.

The walkways looks very nice after I rake leaves and follow up by sweeping with a push broom.

The pile of leaves from the walk way. I ran the lawnmower down the walkway twice and still had a lot of leaves to rake.

My old compost pile in the front and the one I started a couple weeks ago in the back. I still need to sift the old compost pile. It did make some good dirt for my flower beds.

All the leaves and a small bag of paper I shredded in my shredder made a nice addition to the new compost pile. I will be adding more stuff over the next year before I start a new compost pile next fall.

I did a lot today out in the yard. I think Rayna enjoyed playing and watching me while I worked. I did get more then I was think I would done today. I hope to get some done tomorrow after church. Of course, as more leaves fall from the trees I will have more work to do each weekend I have off.

Shopping With Mom

Tonight my mother and I went shopping in Asheville. My mom wanted to check out so new store she heard opened up recently. Besides we needed to put some mileage on the van.

We headed out after mom got home from work. The weather was cloudy and rainy all day. It was a little windy too from Hurricane Matthew just off the coast. On our way to Asheville Outlets we did see some power lines down from tree coming down on them. The fire department was directing traffic around the wires. Other then that we head a good trip to the stores.

Mom and I walked around the outlet stores, mom was looking for the new stores. She could not find them so she said she must have got the location of the stores wrong. We looked in one store where I found an Angel Calendar for 2017 for mom. Mom collects angels and she gets a angel calendar each year.

After we got the calendar, we split up to go looking for things on our own. I looks around a couple store and found a soil sifter. I have been looking for soil sifter to use to sift my old compost pile. I have already start a new one. I found the soil sifter in the tool store. I need to go there again to get some other tools. I like the sifter but I do wish it was a little bigger.

We eat at the chinese buffet in the shopping center next to the outlet stores. We had a enjoyable dinner. Then you went to the Biltmore Park Town Square since I wanted to look for a couple books at the Barnes and Noble store. I sent an hour looking in different sections for books on the topics I was looking for and could not find one book. I did find some books that I met have ended up buying if I have a place to sit other then the coffee shop to look over the books. Barnes and Noble got stupid and took the chairs they had throughout their stores out. I do not know about other people but I have ended up buying less books from the stores. I have more money to spend on books. Maybe they will put the chairs back in or maybe not.

Getting A Van For Mom

Over the past two weeks, I have been working on getting the title for a van my sister, Mary gave my mother and me for my mom to use to drive to work. It took me two trips to the bank and three trips to the tag office to get the title squared away. I got a temporary tag so I can get the van inspected. Monday, I got the title work done. Tuesday, I managed to get the van from my sister's house over to my house. This morning, I took the van to the garage to get it fixed up to pass the inspection. It needs a tuneup, a new side light, and maybe a new battery. I am hoping a good charge will save the battery for now. I plan to replace it for mom before it gets too cold here. Mom should be able to drive the van tomorrow and over the weekend. We will get it inspected on Monday.

Mom will be happy to have her own transportation to and from work. Mom has always wanted a van too. I will be happy to be able to sleep in a little and not have to get up early to take her to work. I hope I can adjust things once she is driving herself to work to work on the blog and my online store.

Enjoying The Weekend Off

I had the full weekend off this weekend. Work has been going good. We are starting to get caught up with the orders. We have been getting more time off on the weekends.

Friday I got a new paper shredder from the store. I have been getting paper shredder from thrift stores but the price of the shredders have got up and the last one did not even work. The last few I gotten and found in the thrift stores were ones that just did the long cuts. I decided, I be better off getting a new shredder from the store in of a used one from the thrift store. The got one that cuts the paper down to a two-inch stripe. The smaller pieces work better for my compost pile and the recycling. Saturday, I worked on shredding my pile of paper and cardboard. It took my all afternoon to shred it. I ended up with two full bags of shredded paper. one for recycling and one for the compost pile. The new shredder works great shreds the cardboard with ease. The bag of white paper and cardboard will go on the compost and the colored paper goes to the recycling center.

I ended up napping Saturday night and Sunday afternoon after church and shopping. I had planned to work on my books for my online store this weekend but I have not gotten to it yet. Maybe later tonight I will. I wanted to do a blog post. I need to work on getting back to posting on the blog regularly. This year, I have been working so much, I have been ending up sleeping during the little time off I have. I miss doing my blog and hearing found my readers. I hope with work getting back to normal, I will back into blogging. I have been thinking of some ideas for myself to enjoy and make the blog interesting.

I have some work projects to do around the house. I hope to get a little hiking in if I can get my schedule to match up with my friends so I have someone to go with me. My mother and I are planning a couple trips in the coming year that I will share my adventure with you here on the blog. I know this year, has not been all that good up the blog with my focus on other things and I thank those of you who stayed and continue to follow the blog.

As I get back into Blogging, things should be interesting and fun. I hope you enjoy following my adventures and reading my post.

Got Back Home And Back To Normal LIfe!

I had a enjoyable time in Kokomo, Indiana, last weekend while up there to attend my nephew's wedding. I wish I had more time to spend exploring the area up there. I even got information about places to go but I will have to wait for my next trip up to Kokomo.

My Mom and I stayed until Tuesday morning. We stayed at the Hampton Inn in Kokomo. The staff there made our stay so enjoyable. We had good trip back to North Carolina with just a few idiot drivers to deal with. We did not stop until we got to the Welcome Center Rest Stop in Tennessee just after leaving Kentucky. I would have stopped sooner but the only rest stop we saw in Kentucky had a sign at the exit saying it was closed. It felt good to get out of the car and walk around a little.

Mom and I decided to stop after getting through Knoxville to stop for dinner and maybe look around some of the stores. I ended up stopping for gas before getting to Knoxville but we did stop in Sevierville for dinner and shopping. We first stopped at the Bass Pro Shop which is right off Interstate 40. Mom and I looked a around a little before heading down the road to go to the Smoky Mountain Knife Works which was the main reason, I stopped at the Sevierville Exit. Before looking looking around the knife works, we eat dinner a little Barbeque restaurant. It was a nice looking place but the Barbecue had no favor. You had to use the sauce on the table which luckily was very good. I guess it was from being tired from driving all day but I remember the knife works being more interesting. I bought a coffee mug for my coffee mug collection. We also got a a t-shirt for a friend of my sister who watched my house while we were away. I was surprised they did not have more stuff with their name on it and what we did find was in the back corner on the store. I would have brought a coffee mug and something else. But again, I may have missed other stuff from being tired from my drive. I am thinking of making a trip to Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville in November with mom to do a little Christmas shopping. Maybe with more rest I will enjoy shopping there more and see more of the stuff I wanted to see.

When I got home Tuesday night, I pretty much just crashed. I was planning to do a blog post when I got home Tuesday but, instead I fell asleep on the sofa before getting up and going to bed. It did feel good to be home. Rayna, my dog was very happy that I was home.

Work this week went good. We had a lot to do but we got enough done to enjoy the three day weekend for Labor Day. While I was gone, seven people quit or got let go. Some of the new people seem to be going a good job. I hope they continue to do a good job and stay.

I am enjoying my weekend relaxing and doing a little work around the house. I hope to get some reviews done for the places I visited while on my vacation. I need to start planning how to use the vacation days I have left. I am thinking of a trip to Eastern Tennessee, Charlotte, North Carolina or both.

Family Time And Exploring Around Kokomo, Indiana

My trip is coming to a end. Tomorrow mom and I head home. Sunday, mom and I spend our day visiting with family. Monday, we explored around Kokomo, Indiana ending our day having dinner at my niece's house.

Mom and I, stay two extra days on this trip for the wedding to spend time with my niece. We didn't get to see her much on the trip to come to her wedding back in June. We almost did not get to spend much time with her since one of her kids was sick in the hospital. Fortunately, he was released from the hospital, Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon we spend at her home with my sister and my other niece and nephews. After our visit we head over to my nephew, Justin's house. Him and his bride thanked us for traveling up from North Carolina and the gift we got will be used a lot and was just want they wanted. My sister started on her way back home in North Carolina and Mom and I head out to eat.

On Monday, after I eat breakfast, I went and got my tire patched. Mom and I first went to Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company and looked at the gift shop. We wanted to take the tour but they only offer one tour each day at 10 AM. It seemed that they would have do a tour for us if they were not short of staff today. I guess some of their staff were still cleaning up from the tornado the hit Kokomo last Wednesday. The tornado's path past just a block away from the Kokomo Opalescent Glass Company. I wanted to see the Kokomo Automotive Heritage Museum and the Seiberling Mansion but both were closed today. Mom and I ended looking around some of the stores in Kokomo. Mom and I found some angels to add to her collection back. I found a couple coffee mugs to add to my collection. I would have brought more angels and mugs if I have the extra money. I found a 9 episode dvd disc of Dungeons & Dragons The Animated series for only 99 cents. I brought it because I remember watching it the cartoon when I young. Hey and for 99 cents I figured I could not go wrong.

My niece invited my mom and I for dinner tonight. After our day of exploring Kokomo we enjoyed our visit with Jessica. She told us that the tornado touchdown in the corn yield in that is behind her house. We are happy to report no damage to her house.

I was sadden to hear of the passing on Gene Wilder. I have had many hours of being entertained by him.

Alena and Justin's Wedding

I had an enjoyable time at my nephew Justin's wedding. Everyone was a little worried that a storm would happen since it was an outdoor wedding and the tornadoes a few days ago. The weather cleared in the afternoon and was clear sunny weather for the wedding. One of Justin and Alena's friend's parents let them have their wedding in their backyard. It was a beautiful place for the wedding.
