SCM Spiritual Retreat

Last October 13-14, 2009 all the staff of Scandinavian Children’s Mission went out for a Spiritual Retreat that was held at Bukal ng Tipan, Maryhill, Antipolo City. These two days of activity had a theme: The Cup of Compassion. Each one of us was required to bring our favorite mug. The cup which is related to our spiritual life with its emptiness, fullness, brokenness, flaws, and blessings. It also reminds us of our spiritual thirst as we’ve held it, filled it, drunk from it, emptied it and washed it. We’ve also learned that it is through our ordinary human experiences that our thirst for God is quenched. The cup that also symbolized our wholeness and connectedness, with no beginning or end.

The retreat was divided into two sessions, first is, Learning Compassion and the second is, Pouring from the Cup. Most of the time we had groupings where we do sharing. We had time also to do our personal reflection and time to talk to God alone. I miss going on the camps at church and I thank God that He set time for all the staff at the mission to have this Spiritual retreat.

God set a good example of compassion for us. Now, it is the time to fill our cup with compassion. According to Mary Jo Meadows, compassion is the quality of being able to “get inside the skin of another” in order to respond with loving concern and care. As we look around, more people are in need of help. Let’s just pause a moment and think how blessed we are because we are not in the position of those people who are suffering, who are hungry, who does not have a house to stay and just sleeping around the streets. God bless us and we must be a blessing to other people. The more we give, the more blessings will come our way.

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his rewards.” Matthew 10:42

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”
Colossians 3:23
