Downtown Hendersonville: Eating and Shopping

I enjoy shopping, eating, or just hanging out on Main Street in Hendersonville.

This is Hendersonville's Mast General Store which is my favorite store on Main Street to shop in. Mast General Stores is a small chain store in the area.
These group of store are in what was planned to be a 20-story building, but the Great Depression cause construction to be stopped. These stores are just a block off Main Street on Church Street between Fifth and Fourth Avenues. My church, First Baptist Church of Hendersonville is one block down on Fifth Avenue. I have been told that there is a three-story basement under the Florist Shop.
This is a old bank building which houses a restaurant called Flight and also United States Senator Elizabeth Dole's Hendersonville Office. I have not eaten at Flight yet but I heard the food is good there.
The Gazebo in front of Village Green Antique Mall is where many events on Main Street are centered. Village Green Antique Mall is one of many Antique Shops on Main Street. I like the Village Green Antique Mall because they have a nice collection of books in their book loft.
This is Black Bear Coffee Shop on Main Street. This is the most popular coffee shop in Hendersonville.
This is an Irish themed Pub called Hannah Flanagan's. My mother works here. People called it simply Hannah's when them are talking about the Pub. Their is another Hannah's in Asheville that is owned by someone different then the Hendersonville one but both were started by the same guy.
This is Mike's On Main Street, it is setup like the old soda shops that they had is the Pharmacies back in the 1950's. They serve sandwiches, soda, and ice cream. It is in the old Justice Pharmacy Building.
Tempo Music is where the local school bands and many local musicians get their interments and music supplies. Tempo Music started back in the the 1960's as the record store. The man who opened the store was killed in a triple homicide. A friend took over the store and over time started to sell instruments and stopped sell records.
Black Rose Pub opened last year. It is owned by the same guy who started Hannah Flanagan's. He sold Hannah's several years ago.

Sure Foundation

“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it”.
Psalm 127:1

Who’s the builder of your house? Did your house have a strong foundation? To build a house, foundation is needed. Before we construct a house, we will need an architect to layout what kind of house we want to have. Strong foundation should established first to support the whole building. In our personal life, we also have an architect and that is our Lord Jesus Christ. He laid a foundation in our lives as an expert builder and no one can laid that other than Him. God is the architect of life and has a great plan for us….But we are still the carpenters and we should construct our lives according to His plans. If we neglect our spiritual life, our house fall into disrepair. God is our sure foundation and without Him we are like a foolish builders who built his house on sand, and easily be destroyed by a storm. We are rest assured to have a sure foundation if we live according to God’s purpose and not on our own. Let Him build a house of our life, and we’ll be sure it’s built right. With God as the architect and His Word the blueprint, our life will be built on a sure foundation.

Good Medicine

Galatians 5:16-26

Yesterday, my Beloved Daniel and I talked a little about vitamins. Vitamins are group of substances that are required for healthy growth and development. It also increases our body resistance against diseases. The Bible said that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and its our special obligation to take care of our body. We must have adequate rest and proper nourishment and do everything possible to provide for our physical well being. One passage in the Bible suggested one way on how to accomplish physical well being, it is written on Proverbs 17:22, “ A merry heart does good, like medicine”. A happy and cheerful outlook on life does have therapeutic value, but that doesn’t just happen. We will experience true happiness and joy if we have right relationship with God and our fellowman. Galatians 5:22, tells us that joy is a result of the Holy Spirit that works in our lives. We must live under God’s control to experience it. God forgive our sins and accept us through our personal faith in Christ. As we walk in obedience to His word, we will have the peace and joy of His presence.

Be Happy ------ It is a good Medicine; a Vitamin that makes us grow healthy.
A merry heart is good medicine.

Great Savings

Yesterday, I did some shopping for clothes and food. First I when to a couple Thrift Shops looking for some shorts that I needed for work. I brought three pairs of shorts for $6 at one of the Thrift Shops. The shorts I got look like new. If I brought them new at regular retail store I would have paid close to $100 for the three of them.

When I go shopping for food for the house I use coupons all the time. I save at a couple dollars each week. This week, I had a coupon for $2 off when you buy two bottles of Budweiser Barbecue Sauce. I got a bottle of Budweiser Barbecue Sauce and a bottle of Budweiser Beechwood Smoked Barbecue Sauce for $1.97 each. So when you figure that out I got one bottle free and six cents off the another. On top of that I brought them in South Carolina which does not have a tax on food. I got them so I could try them out. I love the taste. The good news is that I have another coupon for the product which I am sure that I am going to get again.

Downtown Hendersonville, North Carolina

I enjoy spending time on Main Street of Hendersonville, North Carolina. This is another series of post to Mountain Highs and Valley Lows to introduce my beloved Jo Anne to the area that she will one day live with me. These post will include a few building that are just off Main Street as while as on Main Street. This is the first of four on Downtown Hendersonville. This is on walking on Main Street and a few landmark building. Then I have one on places to shop and eat. Then I will have two on City Hall and the Historical Henderson County Courthouse.

As you turn on Main Street from the north end you see this sign welcoming you Historic Downtown Hendersonville. Main Street is ten blocks of places to shop, eat, learn and be entertained.

This is the Skyland Hotel on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Main Street. As far I know the hotel opened in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald stay and started writing The Crack-Up essays here in the 1930s.

Across from the Skyland Hotel is First Citizens Bank Building. It was build in the late 1980s on the site of the Carolina Theater. I remember seeing this building being built and taking a tour when it first open as the First Federal Savings and Loan. First Citizens Bank was in the building across Sixth Avenue where Asheville Savings Bank is now.

Main Street features many flowers for visitors and shopper to enjoy. The city keeps Main Street full of color with seasonal flowers.

This building houses the Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society.

This is the newest section of the gardens on Main Street. It just opened just a few weeks ago.

Dream Home Ideas

Everyone has a dream home in their mind. What they would like to have in it and around it. In my travels in everyday life and out on the road on vacation I look for ideas of things that I would like in my dream home. I decided to take the following pictures after talking with my beloved, Jo Anne, about our dream home. These are pictures are from the Mountain Lodge in Flat Rock, North Carolina. Their hotel has a few features that I would love to have in my dream home.

Every house should have a great entrance that sets the tone of the home. I would like my dream home to be a place to relax and leave the worries of the rest of the world. I love the landscaping around the entrance here with the path up to the roof covered the entry way.

There is just something about nice wood double doors that says welcome home.

In my dream home, I would like to have a beautiful fireplace like this one to sit and relax with some friends or my family. I can see myself talking or playing games with them in this setting. I also would like to have so nice artwork through out the house.

I know this picture is a little dark but I would love to have a library in my dream home. I really like this setup here with the book shelf and the chairs. Except, I plan on my library to be a whole room full of books, music, and movies.

Hey, what dream home is not complete without a swimming pool. I would like an indoor and an outdoor pool in my dream home.

I would like to have a garden in my yard with a waterfall and native plants. That would be another great place to find relaxation.

Here is a picture of the front of the Mountain Lodge. They have a beautiful hotel and a friendly staff.

Everything has a Purpose

I took these two pictures near my house. They got me thinking about how everything God created has a purpose. God created a wonderful world for us to live in and enjoy. It is responsibility to take care of it. I hope you enjoy these pictures.

Enjoying a Walk to the Mailbox

This morning I walked out to the mailbox to check the mail. I just enjoyed the gifts that God put along the drive way to the mailbox.

I am excited to say that the Blackberries are become ripe at this time. As I picked and eat a few it brought back memories of the Blackberry bushes near my house when I was a child. There was I big patch of Blackberries just down the road from my grandparents' house that my family and I used to go pick blackberries when they became ripe. Oh what happy memories. We would pick a bowl full and eat them. I enjoy the taste. Not only did we eat them by themselves but we made blackberry pancakes and put them on top waffles. Here are some recipes that you can make with blackberries. Blackberries grow in the wild and there are many places you came pick them as you are walking along in the area here.

A common flower I saw in the yard in bloom is the Honeysuckle. The Honeysuckle is a vine that was a flower that you can pick and suck on the end. It taste like honey. This is the Common Honeysuckle, European Honeysuckle or Woodbine (Lonicera periclymenum) which is the most common honeysuckle vine in Western North Carolina. You can also see the Orange Honeysuckle or Western Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera ciliosa) in the area. Both are commonly found along side the roads and in peoples' yards.

These are wild flower you commonly see called Oxyeye Daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare). I think they are very pretty flowers even if people consider them a weed. There is is nothing like walking into a field full of daisies. Girls like to put daisies in their hair. I have seen people make necklaces out of them too.

Helping Two Turtles

This morning on my way home from work I saw two turtles in the road. I stopped took pictures of them. Then moved them to the side of the road in which they were heading. I did that so they would not get hit by a passing car. They were such pretty turtles and here are the pictures I took of them.

Our Trip to Laguna

Yesterday, July 12, 2008 me and my Aunt together with some member of her family had a trip to Laguna. We leave at home around 7:00AM and we arrived there at 9:00AM. It was a 2 hours drive from Quezon City.
On our way, I took some pictures of the mountains we passed by. I love to share those beautiful pictures to my Beloved Daniel and I would love to bring him there on December.

We visited our Church located at Km.8 Liyang Siniloan Laguna, and a meter away from our church is my Uncle’s Pig Farm. I really like the climate there, its quite cold than here in Quezon City.

I am looking forward to bring my Love there, I love to show him our church. We are planning to go there on December to join the Christmas party and at the same time we would like to share some things for the kids which makes them happy. We also plan to reach out those people who are not yet a believer. We love to serve God together and we pray for God’s leading for us that we must have courage to share His word to others.

The Life of A Tortoise

Ecclesiastes 9:11

Have you heard a story of the tortoise and the hare? The hare which was the swiftest animal in the forest, challenged the other animals to a race, but only the tortoise dared to try. For the hare, it seems that it was an unfair contest because he would easily win the race.

As the challenge starts, the tortoise trail far behind and keep on walking while the hare decided to take a nap for the thought that he can still catch up with the tortoise. When the hare woke up, he couldn’t see the tortoise and as he ran towards the finish line he saw the tortoise crossing it slowly and steadily. The tortoise won the challenge.

Like that foolish hare, some believers are “fast movers” whose lives are full of stops and starts. Apostle Paul reminded us to press on toward the goal to win the prize. No more stops, we should walk continously and righteously to win an everlasting life through Christ Jesus. True learning, growing and overcoming are gradual experiences. To achieve a heavenward prize we must go on with the process for there are no shortcuts on the road to spiritual maturity.

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus
.” Philippians 3 :14

I Want to be Good, But I Cannot Do It

Isaiah 33:15-16

Easier said than done. It was the message of the Lord that I heard this morning at Church. Why is it hard for us to be good? Yes, it is easy to say we want to be good but still sometimes we lose the battle. We are losers of the fight because we didn’t allow God to control our lives. Prophet Isaiah wrote some guidelines on how we can live being a good person. First, we must remember we need spiritual food to make us strong and that is by reading God’s word day and night, and by going to Church having fellowship with other believers. Second, we cannot live by our own strength but by the strength that comes from God. Third, we must remember that in all hindrances, God’s power is at work. Fourth, God’s power is manifested in the life of a faithful believer.
Those who walk righteously and speaks what is right will be saved. It is not hard to be good if God is in our heart and controls our life. God said, it is not by our might nor by our power, but through His spirit that give us strength and make us good. Let’s ask God’s help to make us a kind of person He want us to be.

God Will Make a Way

Job 42:2

Way back year 1991, when my cousin at the age of 1 year old was hospitalized due to vomiting. Diagnostic procedures and series of laboratory exams were done and he was diagnosed to have Intestinal Obstruction. The doctor told my aunt that my cousin needs to undergo surgery to remove that blockage that obstructs inside his intestine. Everyone of us are worried because we don’t know what will be the outcome after the surgery. An hour before the said operation was scheduled, my Mom asked everyone of us to join her in prayer and ask the Lord’s leading for my cousin. She lead the prayer and all of us are in tears. In my Mom’s prayer she ask the Lord’s healing touch for my cousin. After our prayer, my aunt decided not to do the surgery but instead she requested for another view of the intestine through ultrasound to check and make sure if there’s still an obstruction. After the ultrasound, all of us were amazed when the Doctor told us that the result was already cleared, no more obstruction seen and all is doing good inside his intestine. We cried because of the joy we felt in our heart and we kneel in prayer to thank God because He make a way for my cousin not to undergo surgery at his very young age. God is so good. He makes a provision for things to get done the way He wants them done. Our job is to pray, to follow His leading, and to trust Him with the results. If He wants it done, God wil make a way.

God will make a way
Where there seems to be no way,
He works in ways we cannot see,
He will make a way for me. ----- Don Moen
